Fiber and Yarn

The Fuchsia Fleece, located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is dedicated to the production of fine Alpaca and Angora fiber and yarn from our own Alpacas and Angora Rabbits.

Our herd of Alpacas and our Angora Rabbits have been carefully selected and bred with the final textile in mind. We strive to produce a fine, clean product that will display all of the natural crimp, softness and sheen of the animal producing the fiber.  All of our fiber is processed, mainly by hand in small quantities, to preserve the individuality of each animal.  They work hard to grow the fiber perfectly and we strive to maintain their work.

The Alpaca herd consists of both the Huacaya and Suri fiber types. The Huacaya has a fine, natural crimp, while the Suri has lustrous silky locks. The Huacaya is available in rose grey, silver grey, black, mahogany, and coffee and greys shading from a light silver, through rose grey to deep charcoal grey. The Suri is available in mahogany, cinnamon, fawn and white.

Currently we have Satin, French, German Cross and English Angora Rabbit fiber available in white, black, black and white, several shades of grey from chinchilla to wild grey, and red.

Our two guard llamas not only watch over their charges, but provide us with black and taupe grey llama fiber to work with as well.

The fiber is available in several forms, depending on the time of the year.  Right after shearing we have fresh from the animal, raw fiber. There is no lanolin in the fiber, so that a soak will remove any dirt that is in the fleece.  Then as processing begins, there is washed fiber, batts, roving, sliver and yarn from which to choose.  The huacaya alpaca and the llama fiber  (dehaired to leave only the soft downy llama undercoat), is carded into rovings, ready to spin, while the suri and the angora is combed into the more parallel sliver. All of the processing of our suri and angora fiber and the baby (cria) fiber, which is the finest fiber that the alpaca will produce,  is done here on our farm to our exacting standards.  It spins like a dream and the resulting yarn is a joy to work with.  Our adult huacaya fiber is currently being sent to a small, alpaca fiber mill to be processed into roving.  All of the fiber before it is turned into roving or sliver is carefully picked free of any vegetable matter, after all I may be the one spinning this fiber.

The next step is to turn this marvelous roving and sliver into yarn for your creations.  The yarn like the fiber processing is done in small quantities in order to preserve the unique qualities produced by each animal.

Since the yarn is hand spun The Fuchsia Fleece can supply you with hand spun yarn in any weight that you have in mind from fine lace weight to Worsted.  So that whether you have a sweater, scarf, socks, mittens, jacket yardage or a wedding ring lace shawl in mind, we can produce the yarn or the product for you.  We are always delighted to work with you to get you the product that you desire.

The Fuchsia Fleece is capable of producing custom orders and custom blends of these all natural fibers to meet your spinning, knitting or weaving needs and dreams. All custom blending is done here on the farm.
